This portfolio is dedicated to the “special” birds I was lucky to get a good shot of. Most of the birds in this category are listed as rare or uncommon in Thailand.
The Beach thick Knee, also known as the Beach Stone-Curlew, is a rare resident which inhabits quiet and undisturbed beaches of remote islands. Extremely difficult to find, this individual was photographed on Surin Island on January 27, 2015.
Bat Hawk are crepuscular birds found in only the most remote forests of Thailand. This bird was photographed in Khao Sok National Park.
The Grey Headed Fish Eagle is the rarest resident raptor in the Kingdom. The remaining fragmented population is relegated to the most remote forest sanctuaries. This individual was photographed in Klong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary in December of 2015.
Crab Plover is a rare migrant visitor to Thailand’s west coast. Typically no more than two or three show up between winter and spring, usually juveniles. They are usually found on at Laem Pakarang in Phang Nga or along deserted beaches on islands off the coast of Trang province.
The Milky Stork is a former resident which now resides in Tolen Sap in Kampuchea. Its numbers have declined and Thailand averages just a single visitor per year. This fellow was found feeding with its more colorful cousins, the Painted Stork, at Pak Talae, Petchaburi in December of 2014.
Every winter, juvenile Himalayan Griffon Vultures pass through Thailand on their way through the Malayan peninsula before turning back. Some, like this individual, suffer from starvation and exhaustion and become grounded for months. This fellow was photographed in Khao Sok in December, 2013.
The Lesser Adjutant is the largest resident stork in Thailand. Once fairly common throughout the kingdom, it has now made its way to the endangered list due to human persecution and loss of habitat. The birds are now confined to Pru Toh Deng in Narathiwat and Koh Kor Khao, Phang Nga.
Green Peafowl are the second largest peafowl species found in Thailand. They are confined to the west and parts of the north of Thailand. This handsome male was photographed in Huay Hong Krai, Chiang Mai.
